OUR TEXAS HONEY QUEEN

Nicole Pettibon of McKinney, TX, is our 2009 Texas Honey Queen! Since being crowned at the November TBA Convention, Nicole has submitted her photo, bio and recipes for the new Honey Queen brochure (see pages 8 & 9). As Honey Queen, Nicole has traveled to Tyler, Plano and Granbury, TX, and to Reno, NV. She looks forward to soon attending the Ft.Worth Livestock Show, the San Antonio Livestock Show, the TBA Delegates Meeting, the Houston Livestock Show and the Williamson County Area Beekeepers general meeting.

We want to give her lots of appropriate exposure and experience. Do let me know of any events in your home area which you would like the Texas Honey Queen to attend on behalf of beekeeping.

Thank you for your generous support of the Texas Honey Queen program!

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Shirley Acevedo

Texas Honey Queen Chair Report, November 2008

What a fun and educational convention we enjoyed at the Southfork Hotel in Plano on November 6-8! We were very well cared for with comfortable rooms and gracious hotel service. Ted, thank you for all the care you put into the location of the convention. Beekeepers abounded from all over Texas. There was much to be learned, thanks to the fine speakers set up by Todd Youngblood.

On Thursday evening, our American Honey Queen fed us well at the Bee Buzz, in addition to the lovely light buffet provided by the hotel. We enjoyed a honey snack mix of cereal, nuts, and pretzels made by Rachael Seida. Collin County Honey Queen, Nicole Pettibon, served honey ice cream; Collin County Honey Princess, Allison Adams, served honey apricot bread with honey cream cheese spread. A table was set for Alamo Area Honey Queen, Coe Gwinn, who unfortunately was unable to join us at the gathering.

Honey Queen Committee Chair Report, July 2008

Dear Texas Beekeepers,

Our Honey Queen is buzzing all about the country!

After being at the TBA Summer Clinic and Field Day on June 7 in Paris, TX, and then participating in several other events, Rachael and I had lunch together to celebrate her 20th birthday on July 2. What a lovely and very capable young woman we have as our spokesperson as American Honey Queen.! We can all be so proud of Rachael Seida, hailing from our great state of Texas!!

Rachael and I had been planning to do a media workshop led by Sarah Kornfield and held for Rachael Seida, Nicole Pettibon (Collin County Honey Queen), and Allison Adams (Collin County Honey Princess). Said workshop was held at Sarah Kornfield’s home in Plano, TX, on Saturday, July 5. Thank you, Sarah, for all of your attention and coaching for these young women. Thank you, Jennie Kornfield, for opening your home to the queens and princess, and thank you, Melody Seida, for attending.

Rachael Seida, as American Honey Queen, will participate in Cooking with Honey demonstrations at the State Fair of Texas on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19. Rachael will also be at the TBA Honey Booth on some other days. Do schedule with John Talbert your time at the TBA Honey Booth at the State Fair of Texas beginning Friday, September 26, and ending Sunday, October 19.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 6, 7, and 8. Call for your reservations at Southfork Hotel, 1600 N Central Expwy. Plano,TX, 972-578-8555, or make them online at www.southforkhotel.com. We want you all to join us at the Texas

Beekeepers Convention in Plano where we will have several queen events and activities, culminating in the crowning of 2009 Texas Honey Queen. Do encourage all past Texas Honey Queens and Honey Queen Chairpersons to join us at the convention for special recognition.

Call me or email me to have Rachael Seida, American Honey Queen, come to an event in your area!

I look forward to seeing you at our TBA convention in November in Plano, TX!

Honey Queen Committee Chair Report, May / June 2008

Rachael Seida has completed half of her one-year reign as our Texas Honey Queen! She has talked to beekeepers and non-beekeepers in Plano, McKinney, Allen, Tyler, Austin, Ft Worth, San Antonio, Spring, Houston, Round Rock, Farmers Branch, Burleson, and Pasadena. She wants to add your city and your beekeeping club to the list of those she has visited!

June, July, and August are good months on her summer calendar for her to come to your area, at least to attend your general group meeting. On the day of your gathering or on the day following, Rachael could give a bee talk to a day care for older children or to the children's summer reading program at your local library or to a garden club or to a seniors group, for example. Call me or send me an email and I will take care of the details for you to have our Texas Honey Queen in your home area, promoting beekeeping and your honey and bee hive products.

Rachael's Queen Basket of bee hive products is expanding! She has lip balm and soap from the Priest's of San Antonio, 1 lb of honey from Metro Beekeepers Association of Burleson, Queen's Cream from the Kornfield's of Plano, propolis tincture from Dick Counts of Tyler, a Ross Round of honey from Michael Fox of Plano, a solid lotion bar made by Janet Rowe of Wylie, comb honey from Marc Hicken of Dallas, pollen and chunk comb honey and clover honey sticks from the Acevedo's of Princeton, a honey cookbook provided by Doug Buchanan of Plano, a handmade bag for carrying Queen/beekeeping essentials made by Linda Pelham of Whitehouse. Let's add your honey or promotional item from your apiary that advertises your beekeeping business! You may send items to Rachael Seida, 885 Legend Trail, Wylie, TX 75098.

Come to the TBA Summer Clinic on June 9! Rachael will be there!! Bring items for our Texas Honey Queen's Basket and your business card for her scrapbook. As people view her educational basket and scrapbook, she will be representiing you as she travels the state of Texas. She plans to represent all of us here in Texas as she goes to the ABF convention in Sacramento, California, in January 2008, to compete for American Honey Queen! Make your plans now to attend too!!

I look forward to hearing from you!
